Compare PIAWE with current earnings for the first 13 weeks or weeks 14–130. Choose the later-period work-hours rule. Amounts are in AUD.
Cap 95% of PIAWE in the first 13 weeks, or 95% in weeks 14–130 when you have capacity to work and actually work at least 15 hours weekly; otherwise cap 80%. Then subtract current earnings and retained non-cash benefits, with a floor of zero.

Formula percentage: 95%
No statutory maximum entered. This figure is before the cap and may exceed the payable benefit.
Standard weekly payments only, through week 130. This tool excludes special categories such as police, firefighters and paramedics, later-period eligibility, permanent impairment and settlements. Verify work capacity and the insurer decision.
For standard NSW claims, the first 13 weeks use 95% of PIAWE. From weeks 14 to 130, 95% applies when you have capacity to work and actually work at least 15 hours weekly; otherwise the percentage is 80%. Apply the statutory maximum to this base, then subtract current earnings and the deductible value of retained non-cash employment benefits. Police, firefighters, paramedics and other exempt categories need a separate assessment.
This tool estimates selected wage-loss benefits only. It excludes permanent disability awards, medical care and settlements. Verify eligibility and the earnings decision with the responsible agency.
Formula and earnings basis
Examples assume eligible earnings of 1,000 and no current earnings. Australian examples are before a statutory maximum; Canadian examples assume board-adjusted net earnings. These are weekly benefits, not settlement values.
Benefit calculation questions
- Does this calculate a settlement?
- No. Weekly wage-loss benefits are different from permanent impairment awards, medical coverage and any settlement. This tool does not combine them into a settlement price.
- What is PIAWE in NSW?
- It is pre-injury average weekly earnings assessed under the NSW scheme. Use the PIAWE in the insurer decision and check the relevant look-back period and earnings rules.
- Does the calculator cover payments after 130 weeks?
- No. Entitlement after 130 weeks and the five-year duration rules require additional capacity, impairment and statutory checks. Confirm them with SIRA and the insurer.
- Do you save the earnings I enter?
- No. The calculator runs in your browser. You do not need an account, and you should not enter a name, claim number or personal medical records.
- Which rules should I verify before using the result?
- Check the earnings assessment, applicable benefit period, statutory maximum and minimum, work capacity and the official claim decision. The responsible agency determines eligibility.
Verify these facts with the scheme
