Standard net earnings-loss formula for accidents from 1 January 1998. WSIB determines earnings and earning capacity, return-to-work requirements, minimums and entitlement. It is not a permanent impairment award or a settlement.
For accidents from 1 January 1998, WSIB generally pays 85% of the difference between pre-injury net average earnings and net earnings after the injury. The board determines the earnings basis and any earning capacity. Maximum insurable earnings and low-earnings minimums can affect the amount. Enter board-adjusted net figures; this tool does not calculate Ontario income tax or a permanent impairment award.
This tool estimates selected wage-loss benefits only. It excludes permanent disability awards, medical care and settlements. Verify eligibility and the earnings decision with the responsible agency.
Formula and earnings basis
Examples assume eligible earnings of 1,000 and no current earnings. Australian examples are before a statutory maximum; Canadian examples assume board-adjusted net earnings. These are weekly benefits, not settlement values.
Benefit calculation questions
- Does this calculate a settlement?
- No. Weekly wage-loss benefits are different from permanent impairment awards, medical coverage and any settlement. This tool does not combine them into a settlement price.
- Can I enter my gross weekly wage?
- No. This tool uses WSIB-defined net average earnings after the board’s adjustments and applicable insurable earnings limit. Obtain the assessed net amount from the board or decision letter.
- Does it include non-economic loss benefits?
- No. Non-economic loss for permanent impairment is a separate WSIB assessment. This calculator estimates only the standard weekly loss-of-earnings formula.
- Do you save the earnings I enter?
- No. The calculator runs in your browser. You do not need an account, and you should not enter a name, claim number or personal medical records.
- Which rules should I verify before using the result?
- Check the earnings assessment, applicable benefit period, statutory maximum and minimum, work capacity and the official claim decision. The responsible agency determines eligibility.
