The earnings inputs must already reflect the board’s maximum insurable earnings. A low-income minimum or a special board decision can change the result.
Short-term wage-loss estimate only. WorkSafeBC determines net earnings, maximums, minimums and earning capacity. Long-term permanent disability uses a separate assessment.
WorkSafeBC generally pays short-term wage-loss benefits at 90% of the worker’s net earnings loss. Net earnings reflect board-defined deductions and a maximum earnings limit, rather than the worker’s gross pay. A low-income rule or assessed earning capacity may change the result. Long-term permanent disability benefits use separate rules.
This tool estimates selected wage-loss benefits only. It excludes permanent disability awards, medical care and settlements. Verify eligibility and the earnings decision with the responsible agency.
Formula and earnings basis
Examples assume eligible earnings of 1,000 and no current earnings. Australian examples are before a statutory maximum; Canadian examples assume board-adjusted net earnings. These are weekly benefits, not settlement values.
Benefit calculation questions
- Does this calculate a settlement?
- No. Weekly wage-loss benefits are different from permanent impairment awards, medical coverage and any settlement. This tool does not combine them into a settlement price.
- Is 90% applied to gross wages?
- No. WorkSafeBC assesses net earnings under its rules, subject to the applicable maximum earnings. Enter the board-adjusted net earnings loss rather than applying 90% to a gross payslip.
- Does this include long-term permanent disability?
- No. Permanent disability may use loss-of-function or loss-of-earnings assessments and requires separate board decisions. This calculator covers the standard short-term wage-loss percentage.
- Do you save the earnings I enter?
- No. The calculator runs in your browser. You do not need an account, and you should not enter a name, claim number or personal medical records.
- Which rules should I verify before using the result?
- Check the earnings assessment, applicable benefit period, statutory maximum and minimum, work capacity and the official claim decision. The responsible agency determines eligibility.
